Is AI a shortcut or a scaffold? The difference lies in when and how it is introduced to the student. In this 40-minute session, educators will develop foundational skills for designing Level 1 AI-Assisted Assignments—tasks specifically engineered for low-cognitive-load activities like brainstorming, feedback, and revision.
Participants will explore the "Human-First" workflow, ensuring students engage in independent thinking and drafting before turning to AI as a thought partner. Participants will be provided with prompt engineering templates that incorporate grade-level rigor, scaffolding for first-time AI users, and classroom norms. Participants will also tackle the essential logistics of AI integration: standardizing AI usage disclosure, creating custom Gems for repetitive tasks, providing "Opposition" pathways for students who opt out, and choosing the right platform (Gemini, SchoolAI, etc.) for the task at hand. Walk away with a blueprint for AI use that protects student agency while enhancing their output.
